Glossary of Responsible Investment Terms

AllianceBernstein

The responsible investment landscape is fast evolving as investors acknowledge the importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, not least the impact of climate change. However, ESG analysis and how it relates to investment policy can sometimes be unclear and potentially confusing. This glossary was created to provide a concise yet comprehensive list of terms commonly used within the context of responsible investing.

Researched and written by Gabriel, it covers an A to Z of terms and topics and was initially produced in conjunction with a campaign targeting Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pension schemes, which are required by the UK Department of Work & Pensions to state in their Statement of Investment Principles:

  • Their policy on how they take into account financially material ESG considerations, including climate change
  • Their stewardship policy (voting and engagement)
